DVD duplication options

October 12, 2007

New equipment and software have made CD and DVD duplication cost effective and convenient. There are several different methods for duplicating and labeling CDs and DVDs. The option you choose will depend on your budget, your time constraints and the quantities you’re producing. You can use:

1. A standalone DVD duplicator tower. This is a manual system that works well if you’re producing small quantities. No PC or software is needed. The tower copies the CD or DVD master to four to14 discs at a time.
2. An automated DVD duplicator. For larger quantities, consider an automated duplicator. Insert the CD or DVD master and the system copies hundreds of discs automatically.
3. An automated DVD duplicator with a printer. Some duplicator models include a print function, automating the entire duplication and labeling process.

More on webcams

Buying Guide
Webcams range in price from as low as $30 to as high as $150 or more, with most models priced in the $35 to $80 range. More expensive webcams usually deliver better quality images and may offer additional features, such as pan and tilt, which give you more freedom of movement while you’re talking or taping.

One of the first considerations when buying a webcam is to make sure that your computer meets the minimum hardware and memory requirements. (Unless you’ve got an old computer, it should be fine).

The next thing to consider is your computer’s display type. Most webcam bases can fit fine over an LCD screen or a laptop display, but not all webcams are good at resting on flat surfaces, such as a desk or the top of a CRT display. If you’re using your webcam with a laptop or notebook, you might consider models designed specifically for laptops. Laptop webcams have a lighter, more compact design than standard models.

Image quality is another consideration. A webcam’s image quality depends on the “frame rate” and the camera’s resolution, although the quality and capability of the lens also plays a role. The frame rate is expressed in frames per second (FPS), with common frame rates for webcams at 15 FPS and 30 FPS. Higher frame rates deliver better video quality with less image flicker, although a higher frame rate can also take longer to transmit across an internet connection. Keep in mind that the speed of your internet connection, as well as current

Internet traffic, also affects transmission. More expensive webcams usually provide better still and video images, and they also usually perform better in low-light situations.

Resolution is measured in pixels, and the higher the resolution, the better the image quality. Common webcam resolutions are 320X240 and 640X480.

Glass lenses provide better image quality than plastic lenses, but the price increases with the quality. Focusing may be automatic or manual, but you’re probably better off with auto focus – since it’s one less thing you have to worry about when you’re recording.

Although many webcams support audio, they don’t always include a microphone. Some have an integrated microphone, while others use a headset. The headset provides freedom of movement, but many individuals find it more cumbersome than a built-in microphone. The quality of supplied microphones is often poor, but you can always spring for a better microphone if audio quality is a major issue.

Some webcams also include software bundles that come with basic photo editing software, basic video creation and editing software, remote monitoring/motion-detection/time-lapse video capture software, collage or photo album creation software, and software for creating and sending video e-mail. Check your model for the features you want. In most cases, the best advice is: Keep it simple!

Is Ghostwriting for You?

Is Ghost Writing Right for You?

As great as ghostwriting can be, it’s definitely not for everyone. Ask yourself a few of these questions before you dive in:

Do you have the focus and attention span to spend as much as six months on one project?
Do you have the ability to “release” your words to your client, knowing you may not get any written credit?
Do you have the patience and perseverance to see a long-term project through to completion?
Are you comfortable with critiques and criticism?
Do you have any problems with others editing and revising your work?
Do you have the flexibility and fortitude to work with a client who may not know what they want, may not know their own “voice,” or may make numerous changes along the way?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, then you’d be a great ghostwriter.

Getting the Ghostwriting Gig

October 10, 2007

If you want to make it as a big-money ghostwriter, you’ve got to find the big-money gigs! (Duh!) In some ways, this is just like finding any freelance writing gig… Network, sign up on Elance.com, spread the word, etc. However, for the specialty of ghostwriting, you need to be even more strategic and more targeted.

For one thing, you’ll likely be working with an individual rather than an editor from a magazine, newspaper or website. And chances are, your client has never done this before – so you’ll have to do some hand-holding once you do get the gig. More on that later!

Your current contacts and your circle of friends and colleagues can be an excellent source for leads. Of course, they have to know that you’re offering ghostwriting services, so get the word out and don’t be shy about asking for referrals.

Many writers start with smaller ghosting jobs, such as magazine articles or blog entries. Then they work their way up to where the big fish are! Since executives and CEO-types are prime candidates for ghostwriters, you’ll have to expand your circle of influence to include PR firms, HR departments and your contacts at area businesses or larger corporations.

Just as in most freelance writing situations, referrals are likely to be your best source for finding lucrative ghostwriting jobs. Fortunately, your clients don’t necessarily have to be local – so don’t limit yourself!

Webcam Guide

October 9, 2007

A webcam provides the quickest and easiest way to instantly transmit your smiling face anywhere in the world. Webcams have become much more common in recent years, and are typically used for video conferencing, online education, instant video messaging and, of course, video blogging.

Webcams are versatile, inexpensive and relatively easy to install and operate. If you’ve got a new Mac, your webcam is already built into your computer! If not, don’t fret – The following webcam buying guide will have you up and running in no time!

Webcams can record video and still images, but don’t expect video camcorder quality from a $35 webcam. Some webcams even include audio capabilities, but you’ll probably want to invest in a separate headset or external microphone and plug into your computer’s audio input. In any case, even the least expensive webcams can do the job, if your video is headed to the Internet.
