Why Hire A Ghostwriter?

May 19, 2008

There’s no question about the many benefits of writing a book and becoming a published author. Writing a book gives you instant credibility with clients and prospects, solidifies your expert status and builds your personal or corporate brand. In fact, studies indicate that, while more than 80% of the population wants to write a book, only tiny 2% will ever actually do it! Why? Most aspiring writers cite lack of time, lack of focus or lack of knowing how to physically undertake such an ambitious project.

Enter ghostwriters. No longer those shadowy figures lurking behind the scenes, ghostwriters today are experienced professionals who help aspiring authors write the book of their dreams. These writers and journalists work with their “authors” for months at a time to make sure their book gets written right. Most executives call upon ghostwriters to write for them simply because they don’t have the time or resources to do it on their own.

The price and quality of ghostwriters span a wide range. Like anything else in life, you usually get what you pay for. You can take your chances and try to find a low-priced freelance writer on Elance.com, but you’re far better off trusting your project to a pro who comes recommended from a trusted source or referral. That said, you can expect to pay a good ghostwriter upwards of $50,000 for a full-length, non-fiction business book.

The writing process can take 4 – 6 months to complete your manuscript, but good ghostwriters also serve as an advisor during the process, making sure that you’re project stays on track and is ultimately marketable. However, most ghostwriters rarely get involved in the actual publishing process.

Ultimately, your book is only going to be as good as the material and creativity you provide to your ghostwriter. You’ve got to stay engaged in the process and provide ongoing feedback in order to end up with the book that you envision. Still, with weekly meetings and timely feedback, the process can go smoothly and quickly.

Remember, not all writers are created equal. Look for a ghostwriter who is professional, dependable, collaborative, discreet, easy to work with and not afraid to tell it like it is. Find the right fit and you’re on your way to becoming one of those elite 2% who actually write their book!

Resolution Solution

January 3, 2008

Did you make any resolutions this year? I’m not a big fan of resolutions… Why should I set goals based on some 2000 year-old Roman calendar? Besides, statistics show that only 15% of us will keep those resolutions a month from now… I think I’d rather do a New Year’s Manifesto! It sounds so much more impressive. Here’s what I’d put on my 2008 Manifesto:

Don’t waste time exercising. This is valuable time that I could be sleeping, or perhaps eating ice cream. I can’t fight genetics anymore and, really, how many years is it going to add to my life?

Spend recklessly and buy things I can’t afford. Oh, wait, that was this year. Nevermind. Now where did I leave my iPhone?

Sleep in and stay up late. There is nothing better than sleeping late. It’s like you’re telling the world, “Go on without me, I’ll catch up.” Besides, I’m pretty sure that I was a racoon in a former life. My favorite time of day is 12:30 a.m.

Watch more football. God Bless the NFL Network and the New England Patriots! You’ve given me a legitimate reason to piss away my Sundays since August. And now that we’ve got the NFL Network in HD, I can watch those games over and over, long after football season ends.

Eat more ice cream.
If ice cream was that bad for you, God wouldn’t have invented Lipitor! I tried all that frozen yogurt crap, but I’m going back to the real thing. I prefer gelati from Snoopy’s in Cortona, Italy. Best in the world.

OK, maybe the whole Manifesto thing is a bit overboard… How about this simple advice for 2008: Live. Laugh. Learn. Earn.

Marketing in your local community

December 7, 2007

For most small businesses, all marketing is local marketing — as it should be. But even if your company is regional or national in scope, it’s a good idea to “go local” to select, targeted communities. The keys to effective community marketing can be summed up with three guidelines:

1. Get local: target your marketing efforts down to the neighborhood level
2. Get involved: participate in the community to generate visibility and good will
3. Get personal: as much as possible, market on a one-to-one, face-to-face basis

• Use local city-specific Web sites and local portals
City and town Web sites, as well as local versions of major portals, are growing in number and popularity.

• Use local search engines and directories
Make sure you’re listed with local search engines and city-specific directories.

• Set your Google ad to appear locally
If you operate a local business and advertise on Google, you can target local customers only.

Marketing Your Writing Business

December 5, 2007

It’s a dilemma that most small businesses and startups face: You must market and advertise, but you’re strapped for cash. Fortunately, ideas, energy and imagination can make up for meager marketing budgets. Whether you’re an established company or a nascent business, the marketing formula is the same. You’ll need to start with:

1. The right message
2. To the right audience
3. At the right time

Here are a few tips from the trenches:

• In a world of spam and impersonal emails, try sending personal, hand-written notes.

• Find a related but non-competitive partner and join forces to share marketing efforts.

• Do “grassroots” marketing research by talking to your customers one-on-one.

• Join newsgroups and online discussion groups to position yourself as an expert.
